PELUM-Ethiopia, MELCA-Ethiopia and YALTA jointly organized national bio-safety workshop: the workshop mainly focused to create awareness on biosafety and discuss matters related to the emerging issues and concerns regarding_ introduction of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and planned and ongoing genetic modification of strategic Ethiopian crops.
PELUM Ethiopia Consortium in collaboration with Pesticide Action Nexus-Ethiopia ( PAN Ethiopia) initiated discussion forums to synergize the efforts of stakeholders engaged in agricultural development in Ethiopia and to look in to different options that support the pest management, environmental protection and human health promotion.
The Ministry of Agriculture and its partners organized national stakeholders consultative meeting with a theme of "Organic Fertilizer for Sustainable Agriculture, Environmental Health and Foreign Currency Saving." the consultative meeting is underway and will resume till this afternoon at Hyatt Regency Hotel, Addis Ababa. The workshop has brought together different participants representing CSOs, research institutes, universities, researchers, private sectors, Governmental officials, agricultural experts and media attended the workshop.
PELUM Ethiopia has organized practical training for member organizations and partners on implementation of Agro-ecology at smallholder farming level with a special focus on organic soil, diversification and crop protection. the training consisted theoretical and practical trainings, discussions as well as experience sharing visits. During their stay, Participants practiced conventional compost, organic pesticide (ash brew), and liquid fertilizers.
A two day training was organized by PELUM Ethiopia in collabration with Addis Ababa city administration, farmers and urban agriculture development Commission for experts representing different sub-cities on the horticultural crops production, vermi-composting and waste management from 25-26 February, 2022. the training was held at a nursery site and training center owned by the commission, located at woreda 10,yeka sub-city.
A two day Awareness creation workshop on strengthening transition towards Agro-ecology for ensuring sustainable agriculture and food systems has been organized by PELUM Ethiopia Consortium in collaboration with Ministry of Agriculture(MoA), GIZ and European Union and held on 10-11 February, 2022 at Tokuma Hotel, Adama. The workshop has brought together around 50 participants representing different organizations like, CSOs, research institutions, different directorates from MoA, and members of parliament. . the main objectives were ;
To create an understanding of the transition to Agro-ecology to ensure sustainable agriculture and food security.
To realize the potential for change in the agricultural sector by creating awareness and coordination with government bodies, farmers and civic society associations based on soil health& fertility, agroecology and food systems in our country.
To address the gaps in the implementation of policy, strategic planning in the agricultural sector and set solutions.
To keep & it complete Soil health and fertility, Agro-ecology and food system.
the objectives and programs of the consultative workshop was presented by Mr. Dereje Regasa. the opening remark was also delivered by Mr. Meles, State minister of the Ethiopian ministry of Agriculture.The workshop accompanied by 10 presentations by different presenters on soil health and fertility, agroecology and food systems, as well as policy and strategic plans presented to the workshop participants. after the presentations, participants forwarded their reflections, opinions and questions. thus, the points were well captured and answered from the stage. at the end of the workshop, the participants discussed on the way forward and agreed to to prepare monitoring and evaluation checklist for policies and strategies. to complete the land use policy, proclamation and strategy and implement it sooner than later, apply vermi-compost, compost and other organic means and conduct further studies and to organize similar workshops.
the workshop was met its objectives and concluded by apperciating PELUM Ethiopia and GIZ for organizing the valuable workshop and the participants.
