Capacity Building Trainings on Ecological Plant Protection Alternatives
PELUM Ethiopia and A Glimmer of Hope in collaboration with PAN Ethiopia organized training on ecological plant protection. The two day training held on June 10-11, 2023 in Debub Sodo Woreda of Gurage zone. The training aimed to enhance the capacity of kebele and district level community facilitators and DPs.
The training consist three sessions; theoretical, practical and field level Assessment. The theoretical part covered the following topics; General introduction to pests and disease management, adverse impacts of pesticides, Know pests and natural enemies, alternatives to pesticide use, integrating pest and production management and etc..
The main and important part of the training was delivering practical sessions on preparation and application of botanicals and food spray. The first was on demonstrating preparation of GGOC paste, extracted from garlic, ginger, onion and chilies, second baking soda mixed with cooking oil, and thee last was preparation of ash brew and food spray.
During the last day, trainees visited nearby households to conduct insect scouting/assessment methods. Questions and answer sessions and reflection were part of the training. A total of 67(16F) participants, community facilitator, development agents, experts, Gurage development and cultural association, A Glimmer of Hope , PAN and PELUM Ethiopia participated.
